Global Brown Center

Incoming Undergraduate Students

The International Mentoring Program engages incoming undergraduates who identify as international, regardless of their legal status or place of residence, in the academic, co-curricular, and social opportunities and challenges of coming to Brown and the U.S.

The International Mentoring Program (IMP) is primarily organized and run by undergraduate international students, offers social, academic, and educational support through a yearlong peer advising program. The program is comprised of approximately 26 upper-class students and an administrative advisor.

IMP introduces incoming international students to life at Brown through:

  • Pre-arrival Communication
  • International Orientation
  • Yearlong Peer Mentoring
  • Campus Life and Academic Workshops
  • Social Gatherings

About IMP

IMP is devoted to facilitating the transition of international students to life on Brown's campus and the United States.

History

A student initiated the International Mentoring Program in 1999 to offer peer support to incoming international students at Brown. The students in the program also helped create International Orientation. IMP had changed throughout the years as the international student community and applicants grew at Brown. In 2006, international orientation became an extension of orientation with international students arriving several days ahead of the start of general orientation.  In 2011, IMP supported approximately 220 new internationals and expanded to a four-day program.
