What is EmpowerED Conversations?

EmpowerED Conversations is a unique collaboration among the Graduate School, Global Brown Center and supporting departments/offices, aimed at fostering self-agency, enhancing communication skills, and building a sense of community among Brown graduate students. This series will provide you with practical tools, engaging discussions, and community building opportunities tailored to address the specific challenges faced by graduate students from diverse backgrounds.

Program Objectives:

The primary objectives of the EmpowerED Conversations Series are as follows:

Foster self-agency by empowering students to proactively navigate and contribute to their academic and personal environments.

  • Encourage a dialogue style that values and respects diverse perspectives, ensuring an inclusive and enriching learning environment.
  • Establish self-agency and self-awareness for students on where to position themselves in difficult conversations.

Equip graduate students with effective communication strategies for challenging discussions.

  • Provide practical tools for expressing ideas confidently and respectfully.
  • Enhance students' understanding of self-advocacy and its importance in academic and personal settings.

Foster a supportive community where students can share experiences, learn from each other, and build lasting connections.

  • Encourage a thoughtful exchange of experiences by providing a platform for students to share diverse perspectives.
  • Cultivate a dialogue style that values empathy, active engagement, and mutual understanding.

Registration Requirements: 

The pilot group will consist of a maximum of 30 international graduate students, ensuring an intimate and conducive environment for meaningful interactions.

  1. Participants must be currently enrolled as graduate students.
  2. Prospective participants are required to commit to attending all three events in the series.
  3. Active engagement and participation are essential for the success of the series. Participants are expected to contribute to discussions, activities, and networking opportunities.
